Community Service Requirements

Community Service Requirement – Bravo Medical Magnet High School

At Bravo Medical Magnet High School, we believe community service is an important component of a rigorous education. Volunteering helps students:

❖ Develop strong character and a sense of responsibility
❖ Explore a variety of career opportunities
❖ Make a positive impact in their community

All students are required to complete 40 hours of community service by senior year. These hours may be completed at any time during the calendar year, including weekends and long breaks. Community service hours are permissible beginning the first day of 9th grade through 12th grade.

Any volunteer hours completed before 9th grade will not count toward the 40-hour graduation requirement. However, students may still include those experiences when discussing activities and commitments on college or scholarship applications.

Because community service is a graduation requirement, students are strongly encouraged to begin and complete their hours before senior year.

All seniors are strongly encouraged to complete their community service hours by the start of the spring semester of their 12th-grade year to avoid a stressful final semester of high school.

Students are encouraged to choose volunteer opportunities that interest them and provide meaningful learning experiences while helping others.

Approved Community Service Locations

Community service hours must be completed at a nonprofit, non-religious, and non-political organization.

Below is a suggested list of organizations where our students have previously completed community service hours and that have been approved by our office. Please note that this list is not exhaustive, and students may complete their hours with other qualifying organizations that meet these requirements. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KlyB0N75xz0ZFEayAnkp1jHis6zO7-4clqlRmz9RFZs/edit?usp=sharing

Students are strongly encouraged to consult with the Magnet Office BEFORE beginning their community service hours to ensure that the organization they plan to volunteer with is an approved and acceptable location.

Community Service Required Forms

Students must obtain and complete the required community service forms. Please visit the Magnet Office before beginning your community service hours to verify that the organization and volunteer opportunity meet the school’s requirements.

Suggested Plan

The following organizations are pre-approved volunteer sites:
  • Bravo Medical Magnet special events, such as back-to-school night, parent-teacher conferences, 9th grade registration nights, senior awards night, etc.
  • Public libraries

  • Parks and Recreation programs

  • Public elementary or middle schools (no other high schools)

  • Animal shelters

  • Medical centers and hospitals (no private medical or dental offices allowed due to safety)

If you are unsure whether the organization you have selected is an approved site, please contact Ms. Paulina Martinez (Magnet Coordinator) or Ms. Marisol De La Cruz (senior office technician) before starting your community service hours.  For your convenience, the required forms are available in the magnet office.

Please submit all completed forms to the Magnet Office.

Make sure that both sides of the Community Service Form are fully completed and include the required signatures from the supervisor, parent/guardian, and student.

In addition, please attach one of the following to verify your volunteer hours:

  • The official stamp or seal of the organization on the form

  • Your supervisor’s business card

  • The organization’s official letterhead with your supervisor’s signature verifying your hours
